In 1948, the first stored-program computer was developed at Manchester University by F.C. Williams and T. Kilburn. The "Manchester Mark I," as it was called, was built to test a CRT memory tube invented by Williams. As such, it was a small-scale computer. A full-scale stored-program computer was developed a year later (EDSAC) by a team led by Maurice V. Wilkes.
